Milky Way at Pemaquid Point Light

Pemaquid & Marshall Point Lights - June 27-29

3 Day Workshop

Please read our Mission Statement for info regarding Mike's teaching style.

Visit the GENERAL OVERVIEW & ITINERARY PAGE for more information about gear specifics, clothing, weather, etc.

While no knowledge of night photography techniques is required for this workshop, please understand this is not a Photo 101 class - you should have a decent working knowledge of your camera gear and how the Exposure Triangle (aperture, shutter speed & ISO) works. Please contact us with any questions or concerns BEFORE signing up for this workshop. Thanks.

** Due to the recent popularity of night photographers visiting Pemaquid & Marshall Point Lighthouses we have planned this workshop in the middle of the week to limit the amount of disruptive car headlights, flashlights, headlamps, etc. **

This workshop has been planned around the New Moon cycle to maximize the visibility of the Milky Way and other features of the night sky. This is a 3 day workshop where we will be photographing Pemaquid Point Light one night and Marshall Point Light one night. We will spend two afternoons on classroom instruction & image processing. We will spend 2-3 hours during our meet-and-greet discussing camera settings & other pre-shoot information.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, Maine is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Maine for good reason - it is a very scenic spot located on a cliff above some of the most rugged wave-bashed rocks in the state. Pemaquid is featured on the back of the Maine state quarter. The lighthouse tower and attached fisherman's museum make for great foreground elements as do the old fuel storage and bell tower buildings. This location is also the first place Mike ever viewed and captured the Northern Lights.

Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, Maine is one of our favorite spots to photograph the features of the night sky while incorporating an iconic lighthouse as a foreground element. Some of the great aspects for shooting here include the long walkway out to the tower, the rocky outcropping & tidal pools at the base of the tower, and most importantly the fantastic "wagon wheel" feature coming from the lighthouse itself, caused by the astragals in the tower cap.

This is a comprehensive workshop with an emphasis on post-processing that will consist of 2 nights and 2 days - approximately 9 hours of in the field photography and over 12 hours of classroom tutorials & processing time. Check out our Processing page for some examples of what we will be covering in class.

Itinerary:

June 27: Afternoon meet and greet, discuss camera settings and features of the night sky - in the field photography 9:30PM - 1:30AM

June 28: 2PM - 6:30PM classroom instruction & image processing - in the field photography 9:30PM - 1:30AM

June 29: 2PM - 6:30PM classroom instruction & image processing

In The Field Shooting: In late July the Milky Way appears vertically in the sky shortly after sunset. We will be set up & shooting around sunset and through the night for approximately 4 hours. Mike will take turns helping each participant with composition, lighting, troubleshooting, etc.

Classroom Instruction: Our classroom time will mainly consist of processing tutorials and techniques via Lightroom & Photoshop and some of our favorite plug-ins to create remarkable images. Bring your laptop with Lightroom and Photoshop installed to learn techniques for processing in the digital darkroom. We will cover Mike's entire digital darkroom workflow from RAW file to finished image - from the basics of adjusting highlights & shadows, white & black levels, contrast, clarity, noise reduction, color balance, sharpening, lens corrections, graduated & radial filters, etc. to the more advanced techniques involved in complex masking, layering, transforming and exposure blending. Mike will take time to help each participant with their images as we progress through class time. Check out our Processing page for examples.

Home Base: Our home base and the classroom instruction for this workshop will be the Hampton Inn in Thomaston, where we have arranged for a block of rooms at a discounted rate. The Hampton also offers a discount for AAA members. To reserve your room, call 207-594-6644 and tell them you are with the Mike Taylor Photography Workshop. You are of course free to stay anywhere in the area.

Lodging, transportation and meals are not included. We will be carpooling to the photography locations.

More specific information regarding meet up time & location and a PDF covering the essentials of night photography will be sent out to participants via email well before the workshop date. All participants will receive a hard copy of the PDF handout to go over during our meet-and-greet session.

Availability: This workshop is limited to 4 participants.

Physical Requirements: Boots or shoes with decent tread are necessary. The Pemaquid area is mostly grass but there are some rocky areas and uneven terrain. Most of the shooting locations are visible from the parking lot. The base of the lighthouse tower at Marshall Point is surrounded by rocks, seaweed & tidal pools and can be slippery. Boots or shoes with decent tread are necessary. Anyone who has balance issues should contact us before signing up.

Investment: $1199 per participant - Alumni discount of 20% if you've taken a previous workshop with Taylor Photography. A non-refundable 50% deposit is required to reserve a spot or you may pay in full. Due to the logistics and planning of this workshop the full balance is due before February 1, 2017 or your reservation will be subject to cancellation. Please contact us ASAP if issues arise.

If you have a friend or significant other who would like to attend the workshop but not participate, they will still need to register as a participant by paying 50% of the investment amount and sign the required waiver & consent form before we head out into the field. It is important that we have an accurate headcount for each workshop.

If you have any hesitation about signing up, check out the Testimonials page where clients have shared their experiences.

Payment: Use the Paypal buttons below to pay the full amount, a 50% deposit or the remaining balance.
